Jason ChaputGraduate of East Grand Forks High School 1993-1997. Jason trained during the off season with GFC and often travelled to Central during the season to train with Central Runners. He was a 3 year captain in Cross country and 2 year captain in Track & Field. He finished 3rd in Minnesota in the 1996 State Cross Country Championships. Jason was also a member of the 1996 Class A sprint Medley relay. 5K 15:12, 800m 1:59, 1600m 4:32
Minnesota State, Mankato 1997-2002. 2 year captain (XC), 3 year captain (T&F), Member of 3rd place 1999 NCAA DII national Cross Country team. Jason competed in the NCAA DII national meet in 1999, 2000, 2001. 2002 NCC Indoor champion in the 500m, he still holds the School and Facility record in the 500m for Mankato. 6-time NCC all-conference in Track. Pr's 10k 32:25, 800m 1:53, 500m 1:04.26 Jason and his wife, Lexi, reside in Bloomington, Indiana. Jason is currently employed at Indiana University as the Manager of Sponsorship Development and Special Projects. Both Jason and Lexi have been very helpful with alumni affairs for Central Cross Country. Contact Email: [email protected] Paul Shafer2006-2012 Graduate of Grand Forks Central. Paul is the current 800 m record holder at 1:56.54. Paul is currently at student at the University of Minnesota. His best memories were working hard and competing with great teammates. A highlight of Paul's career was the 2011 State Track meet where he finished 2nd in the 800m, 3rd in the mile and triple jump.
Paul also had a very successful cross country career for the Knights. He was All-state in 2011, and All conference 2011, 2010, and 2009. PR's 1600m 4:23.96, Triple Jump 43' 5", 5k 16:20 Contact email: [email protected] Nate FialaNate Fiala (1997-2001) set the standard for future Central runners with his work ethic and ablitity to lead the team as a captian due to his pure love of the team and its traditions.
Highlights: Team wins at the Griak Invitational and State Championships in 1998 PR's: 5K 17:01, 3200m 10:25, 1600m 4:45 Best memories: Summer running group, frisbee-football, celebrating with the team on the bus ride home from the state meet in Minot in 1998 after winning, the four mile build-up workouts, going through the back-seat of a car that was stopped in a crosswalk during a training run (twice!), team camping trips to Bemidji, having “the” winter running jacket passed down to him by two teammates he looked up to; and Nate will never forget running the second loop of the 1999 State XC Meet in Bismarck with Lee DeKrey. Passing scores of runners together on that loop trying to beat the “invincible” Fargo South team, only to miss the title by 1 point. It was one of the best races he's ever been involved in. Nate went on to the University of North Dakota (2001-2005) Highlights: Ran track and XC; Ran 1500 through 10K in track, and various relays; XC Team Captain as a senior, Personal Records (PR’s): Coming Nate and his wife, Amy, live in East Grand Forks, MN and have three children Aidan (2007), Claire (2008), Paige (2011). She was part of the girls team that defeated the Jamestown girls team that had won 13 straight EDC championships. Once attending UND Katie continued to be a volunteer coach for the Knights even after she graduated until she left for graduate school in 2011. 4K PR 15:55
Highlights: 2003 EDC Team Champs and accidently breaking the runner-gal off of the first girl’s state trophy. Best memories: Breaking records (literally) before EDC 2003, Secret Sisters, mud runs, Coach Allan’s birthday at every restaurant, the Goonies becoming Frisbee football champs, running side-by-side with Erin Lembke at the home meet, and always wanting to run down University Ave Katie currently lives in Slidell, Louisiana where she is a Performance Dietitian/Research Associate with the University of Pittsburgh’s Warrior Human Performance Research Lab working with Naval Special Warfare at the Stennis Space Center (Stennis, MS). Lee DeKreyLee was a member of the Cross Country and Track from 1998 to 2002. His high school personal Records (PR’s) were: (1600) 4:30.48 (3200) 9:51.84
Lee was inducted into the Central Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013 for his accomplishments in Cross Country and Track & Field. Lee was the Cross Country state champion in 2000 and runner up in 2001. During his career the team captured the 1998 state title and placed second in both 1999 and 2001. Highlights: 2-time captain of XC and T&F, 1998 Championship Team, 1999 and 2001 runner up teams, All Conference/All State in 2000 and 2001, Senior XC Athlete of the Year 2001, Cliff Cushman Award 2002 Best memories: Saturday long-run rewards in the form of delicious doughnuts and the utter epic-ness of the Frisbee football tournament during the camping trip Lee had a very successful career running for the University of North Dakota 2002-2007. While there, Lee graduated from OHSU School of Dentistry in Portland and Caroline earned her Masters in Speech Pathology at the University of Oregon. Andrew ran cross country and track with the Knights from his freshman track season until graduation. He was a captain, all-conference, and all-state cross country runner his senior year, finishing 4th and 11th respectively. He also medaled in the 1999 unseeded Regional XC race in Kenosha, WI. 5K PR: 16:31. 800 (PR: 2:03), 1,600 (PR: 4:40),3,200 (PR: 10:11) . He went on to run cross country and track on a scholarship at Valley City State University where he was the #2 runner his freshman year. 8K PR: 28:14. In track he ran many races ranging from 400 to 5,000 meters, including the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Favorite Knight Memory: summer long runs with the team at Turtle River and the ball-buster on the Bemidji trails. Andrew and his wife, Angela, live and teach in Bismarck where they are busy raising three children: Faith (2004), Ross (2007), and Cayle (2009). Andrew teaches English at Bismarck High School, and Angela teaches first grade. Contact email: [email protected]. Colin ParrishColin was on the XC and track teams 2004-2008. He had a very sucessful career for Central in both Cross Country and Track & Field. Colin won 2 individual EDC titles (2006, 2007) in cross country and finished 2nd at the state meet in 2007. In 2007 he was Gatorade senior athlete of the year in cross Country for North Dakota.
Personal Records (PR’s): 800: 1:57 1600: 4:22 3200: 9:28 5k: 15:45 Highlights: 2006 team EDC champions. 2x indoor state champion track (3000m- 2007, 1600m- 2008), 8x conference champion in track (3 indoor- 3200- 2006, 1600m- 2007, 800m-2008, 5 outdoor- 3200- 2006-2008, 1600m- 2007-08) 2005- EDC team Champions. 6x All state- ( 5th mile- 2006, 2nd 1600m 2nd 3200m- 2007, 7th 1600m 3rd 3200m 6th 4x800- 2008) Best memories: Would definitely have to say his favorite memories were the camping trips. He absolutely loved the team atmosphere and the amazingly fun ball buster workouts. Colin also has a great memory of doing a 12 mile run with fellow Central alum Lee DeKrey his senior year and having him there to push the pace the whole run. One of his favorite single memories is falling through the ice on a run with Ronnie Kyllo. Nothing better than running 4 miles in a North Dakota winter in wet clothing. College/University: North Dakota State University Years participated: 2008-2010 (Graduated in 2012) Personal Records (PR’s): 1600: 4:18 3000m: 8:42 5k: 15:22 10k: 32:45 Highlights: Sophmore cross country season- Being the consistent #1/#2 runner on the team. Injury/surgery ended my career with North Dakota State 2 years early. Colin and his wife, Skyler, currently live in Spokane, Washington. Colin works for Toyota and is currently trying to get back into competitive distance running. In the process of training for his first triathlon and half marathon over the next 8 months.
