The rain came down heavy, the wind blew at 20 mph, the course had muddy puddles through out it, and the Central Knight Cross Country runners couldn't be happier and more excited to race. At the starting line of each division words of dispair were muttered, but the Knights cheered for the weather and then most importantly went out and raced hard.
The middle school athletes started out the day with some great races, seventh grader Cole placed 6th and raced to new PR in 12:29 over the 3k course. Alexis placed 8th in the girls race and was 1 sec of her PR, and Emily K. placed 13th with a new PR of 14:42.
A large group of Central JV girls stepped to the line with more than just this race against other teams on their mind as they were racing each other for spots on the Central team that travels to Valley City in three weeks for the state meet. Meghan, who coming off an injury that cost her weeks of training, jumped to the lead and never gave it up to win her first JV race in a season best time of 17:20. Emily C., also battling an injury, placed 6th and PR by 40 secs in 18:15. McKenzie, Heather, and Maia helped the girls JV team to a first place finish with a score of 33.
The JV Boys also had the same goal in mind as the girls, battling for those coveted 10 varisty spots that get to travel to the state meet. Shay stepped up and showed by fighting for the lead during the race how badly he wants to go state and finished a season high 3rd place. New comer Julien, running in only his second race, finshed 7th, followed by Thomas, Eryx, and Ryan to lead the JV boys to a second place team finish.
Freshman Karly took the lead in the varsity girls race and never gave it up over the sloppy course. The top five varsity girls placed in the top 14. Alexis in 3rd, Grace 5th, Rachel C. 8th and Rachel T. 14th. The girls ran a great race and beat rival West Fargo by 16, to win the meet. It was a turn around from early this year when West Fargo beat our girls by 37 in Northwood.
Camron followed Karly's example and took the lead from the gun and raced to a 21 second win over Shanley's Seb Startz. The boys put 5 boys in the top 18 for a 43 to 62 win over West Fargo to win the meet. Leif continued his great season with 3rd place followed by Keelan in 10th, David in 11th. Chris running in his first race back since a hip flexer injury at Northwood, placed 18th.
Our home meet was also the 14th annual "Traveling Fork" battle between Red River and Central. The "Traveling Fork" goes to the lowest combined score of the Varisty boys and girls teams. Central scored a record low 76 points to win the award over Red Rivers 194 combined score.
