Grand Forks Central thrower Thomas Lundmark making big improvementsBy Greg DeVillers on Apr 18, 2017 at 11:38 p.m.

A year ago, Thomas Lundmark fell well short of the state meet-qualifying standard of 48 feet, 6 inches in the shot put.
The Grand Forks Central High School junior has reached qualifying standards twice in as many meets already this season.
On Tuesday, Lundmark was runner-up in the shot put at the Grand Forks Sertoma track meet. He reached the 50-foot mark for the first time in his career with a 50-2 distance. That was good for second behind the 52-6 throw of West Fargo's Zach Willis. Lundmark became only the sixth Class A athlete to reach 50 feet in the shot this season.
"I figured (qualifying for state) would happen, but I thought it would be later in the season,'' Lundmark said. "That (50-footer) was a milestone I've dreamed about since I was a freshman. I figured I'd get it in my senior year.''
Lundmark's personal best in a high school meet entering the season was 44-7.
"That's not a typical jump,'' Matt Fischer, who coaches Grand Forks shot putters, said of Lundmark's improvement. "But we expected big improvements from Thomas.
"The shot is an event where you need to be big and strong. He put the time in the weight room to get stronger. And he's a kid in our summer program who's always looking for extra repetitions.''
How much more distance he can get on his throws, Fischer doesn't know. But the bar has been set higher.
"One of our coaches said that once I hit 50 feet, I should shoot for 55,'' Lundmark said. "I'm going to try. It seems like I always finish a year a foot short of my goal. But I'll take any 50-footers.''
Lundmark credits weightlifting and practice for his improvement. "I don't get tired of either one. Track is my favorite sport,'' he said.
Grand Forks Red River swept the team titles.
The Roughriders had 205 points to runner-up Fargo North's 151.5 in the boys division, with Central sixth at 40.5. Red River was led by male athlete of the meet Tyler Enerson, who won the 110 hurdles and long jump and was second in the high jump and 300 hurdles.
The Riders had 190.33 points in the girls division, with West Fargo second at 110. Central was fifth at 80.33. Mackenzie Severson won the 100 hurdles, was second in the 300 hurdles and anchored winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays to lead Red River. Central's Karly Ackley (800 and 1,600) was a double winner.
