Dear Parents and Athletes:
The Grand Forks Central Boys & Girls Cross Country teams will be holding their 2013 awards banquet at the Chester Fritz Auditorium Wednesday, Nov 20th at 7:00 pm. Please park in the blue “S” zoned portions of the parking lot. This is a very meaningful night for the coaches and athletes as we honor all the hard work and dedication that has been put into our program during the 2013 season. I hope you will be able to join us. Yours Sincerely, Sean Allan Head Coach Boys & Girls Cross Country I think we all can say this meet wasn't the best we've had. But having all the people go was such a fun experience! Thirteen girls and eight boys! The meet started out with Cody Rowley running the Boys Open "Black" race. He did extremely well, finishing in the top half of all the competitors! Then it was the Girls Open Race. Seven of our girls braved the hay bales and whoop-de-doos and finished a little short of where they wanted. But almost everyone had a good race. For most of them it was their first 5k ever! I was so proud of all of them! After that, the Girls Championship Race was undergo. Karly had an amazing 1 minute PR and Alexis Roehl was about a minute after that. Followed by Rat and Mandy who had FANTASTIC races! Me and then Grace held up the back of the Central pack. The Boys Championship Race was soon after the girls. Camron led GFC and Leif was 2nd. Then Chris, followed by Julian who pleasantly surprised us all with his amazing race! Keelan, Ben, and Ian were after that, all racing their last races of their high school Cross Country season. None of them stopped fighting the whole way and that's what makes me so proud to be apart of a team that never stops fighting. This season will be one I remember for the rest of my life and it makes me even more excited for track and even next year's season! Rachel Cox - Junior Captain Sunday the Knights will be running their last race of the 2013 season. They are attending the Heartland Regional Meet In Sioux Falls, SD. The Heartland region consists of IA - KS - MN - NE - ND - SD - WI. This race is sponsored by Nike, and the top two teams from each championship race advance, and top five individuals not on advancing team, advance to Portland, Oregon for the National Championship race.
This year both our boys and girls team qualified championship division, we are allowed to run seven on a team. We have the most girls traveling to the meet than ever before, so we also have a girls team running in the open division!! I'm very excited this year about everyone who is traveling, this is the largest amount of runners who have traveled to this meet. But also I'm just as excited to see such a large group of parents who are helping bring our runners to the meet! It is going to be a great way to finish the great season we have already had. One of my favorite things about attending a meet like this is the chance for our runners to see so many great athletes from other states, and realize just how much they can still push themselves to improve. It is a great incentive for them to train through the winter. Below is a list of times we are racing on Sunday and where results can be found. 11 am Cody Rowley Boys "black" division 11:45 am Girls Open ( 7 GFC girls) 1:15 pm Girls Championship division (6 GFC Girls) 2:00 pm Boys Championship division (7 GFC Boys) Results link http://nxnhl.runnerspace.com/eprofile.php?do=title&title_id=189&event_id=300 Heartland Home page http://nxnhl.runnerspace.com/ Our cross country team starting going camping in Bemidji in1996. The first year there were five of us. It took two tents, one vehicle and we cooked all our meals on a BBQ grill. In 2013 we took 6 vehicles, 7 tents and we rented a dining hall to feed the 34 people that went.
We have grown bigger and we want to keep the camping trip new and exciting, but it's important to remember why we go. Is it to train together? To go on a trip as a group? To get away from parents? Have fun as a team? Run on trails? It is all of those reasons and more. We need to keep in mind what are our core values and what we want to teach the members of our team. On these trips I have seen young people cook their first pancakes, learn to mop floors, be responsible for themselves, older sisters give their little brothers hugs in moments of homesickness, form life long friendships between teammates, older girls help younger put make up on for a big night out, tears of frustration from not being able to finish "ballbusters", tears of accomplishment from finishing their first ten miler around Bemidji Lake, and the sharing of dreams and goals around campfires. The reason I have gone on this camping trip for so many years include the above reasons. But there are many other lessons I hope they learn like how learn to take care each other, how to work together, to set goals, and come closer as a team. That last part, "come closer as a team", that overrides everything. Our team is close on this trip it gives them time they develop relationships, argue like siblings, work out conflicts, and become best friends. These important relationships often begin with our camping trip. The reasons we go on this trip are important to me and I want as many on the team to go as possible. We have always tried to keep the cost to a minimum. The one time we haven't gone to our regular location of Bemidji State Park was in 2010 when we took the train to Glacier Park in Montana. It was an amazing trip and we got to experience some new things. But, it was expensive, and because of that cost I know not everyone was able to attend. Also, we didn't get to do some of the things that we use to teach our values, like cooking together, and our campfire talks. New people who joined the team weren't able to go with because of having to commit to going on the trip six months earlier. We have become a bigger team and we are always trying to find new ways give our young people a better experience. But I don't want this chase of new experiences to take away from our core values. I don't want someone to be unable to have the opportunity to become part of this amazing team, made up of so many special people, because of money or simply the timing of when they joined. For that reason we will continue to go to Bemidji State Park and not Glacier Park. Bemidji State Park has provided the foundation for so many dreams and goals to be thought of and achieved. It has also provided the opportunity for countless friendships to be formed and a diverse group of individuals to find common goals to come together to form a family. This past week we've been preparing to go to regionals. Anybody who wanted to, could come, so we have some of our younger girls who didn't get to go to state, get to have one last meet. Since the pressure from state is finally off the atmosphere at practice has been a little more laid back and easy going. On Wednesday we had our speed workout and we got to do Fox and Hound, which is more a of a game like speed workout. But before we started Fox and hound, we got to do an all out 800 race around the track at Cushman. You didn't have to do the race but it was fun for all of us who did it. The race ended up being really close and our 4x8 team is looking to be strong for track season. Several of us set new personal records and it was exciting to see where everyone placed. Thenon Thursday we had our three mile build up. Mostly everyone set new personal records in this and everyone was looking strong. The regional race for girls we will be running a 5k, just like the boys. So this last week as we train we need to remember, not to go out too fast because we have a whole extra thousand meters to go. But the regional race also has several extra surprises along the way. It has a couple steep short rolling hills( which you should try not to face plant... Rachel Cox) as well as several hay bales we get to jump over. These extra fun things help to keep you alert and help the extra thousand to go by quickly. So as the season wraps up we are glad to see everyone still trying hard to do their best. It's not very often that we get so many people willing and ready to run at regionals so this is looking to be an exciting race. Grace Roehl - Soph Captain |
