Once again, our last week of practice has been a busy one. It began with team pictures in front of the school on Monday. It looked like everyone remembered to bring their uniforms which helped for the process to run smoothly. Then, after pictures, everyone ran down University for long run. Thankfully, the weather was nice which is always a plus. Next, on Tuesday, we started practice right away to beat the incoming rain. One group completed a hill workout while the other ran 800's. It was a good thing that we started early because we just barely finished went the rain started. On Wednesday, we went over the rest of the week's schedule. We also covered how the meet went the past weekend and congratulated 28 boys and girls for their PR's. After, we ran down Belmont and stopped at the dike for some hill sprints. It was amazing to see how much stronger everyone looked since the last time we did them. Thursday was a memorable day for everyone. The Hillsboro cross country team came all the way to Grand Forks to run 400's with us. Afterwards, we showed them our post-workout and shared some cookies that Maria brought. At one point there was a slight jamming of a door and many of the kids and both of the head coach got locks in the ice bath room but Teresa, our lovely custodian, saved the day. On Friday, our girl's varsity team traveled to Minneapolis for the Roy Griak Invitational. We stayed the night and made it to the meet the next morning just in time to the watch both division I college races. Our girls made a point to drink a lot of water after seeing the results of dehydration. Due to the concern for heat our race was move up to 12:40. The course and weather tried to work against us but we fought back and raced tough. As a result, we placed 12th, bettering our place of 15th last year. Meanwhile, the rest of the team ran in Grand Forks in preparation for the Milaca Mega Meet. At 4:45 am they left for Milaca and several hours later were ready to race in one of the biggest high school meets in the country(6200 registered runners). The weather wasn't ideal but there were still some impressive performances in all of the many races they ran.

We have had a very busy last two week! Week 4 was a mix of speed workouts, and a long run and then we headed down to West Fargo to compete! Everyone did great, despite the warm and super windy weather. We even managed to get a couple of PR's off this meet! Our varsity boys got second place to Red River and 6 of our boys got in the top 20, with Quinn Roehl getting 20th at his first varsity race! The girls team secured a 1st place finish, even though one of our top girls (Rachel Torrey) was missing. Our JV girls got 1st, 2nd and 3rd with Maia Jackson winning her first race and Maria and Kirsten following right behind. Our middle school boys and girls also did amazing!
Week 5 was a bit of a whirlwind. We had long run on Monday, and then speed the next day when it was 90 degrees! Everyone pushed through it though and had good workouts despite the heat. On Saturday we headed to Bismarck, where it was a balmy 48-50 degrees outside and rainy. Everyone ran really well though and we had lots of PR's. Ryan Meyer got 20th in his varsity race and the boys ended up getting 8th place. The varsity girls won with 4 of our girls placing in the top 20. Aislinn Hunter won her first JV race with Maia Jackson following close behind, and Madison Elden in her first JV race, placed 11th! Our Middle School boys had Carter Elde leading them with a 25th place finish, and the Middle School girls had Jillian Riley leading them. These past two weeks have been pretty hard but it all payed off. Next week we head to two meets, varsity girls to Minneapolis for the Roy Griak meet and then the others heading to Milaca for the Milaca Mega Meet! Alexis Roehl - Junior, Captain In Week 4 of the season, the team was still trying to get used to the feel of school and having practice after school everyday. But we started off the week with a nice speed workout down at Lincoln park. I'm the middle of the week we had long run because of having a meet on Saturday. So then on Saturday came the fun part of showing off all of our hard work. We traveled to West Fargo where the all of the age groups completed very well and we had many people place in the top 20!! We had some people that really stood up and ran very very well. We even had some middle schoolers run Varsity and they ran some impressive times even with a course that was slow. The wind was relentless and the ground was uneven but everyone fought through it and ran very well!! Week 5 of the season was a little different than other weeks. We started off the week with long run because of the weather. It was in the 80s on Monday and Tuesday set a new record for ND as it hit 94 so we just did a quick speed workout. We have also been having weights from 3:30-4:00 which is kinda fun to go lift some weights. On Friday which is the day before a big meet out west in Bismarck we watched a inspirational video that talked about how the little thing make a big difference and how to never give up even when it's tough. Then the big day came, time to do a little racing! We had a nice 4 hour bus ride to Bismarck and it wasn't the nicest day but it was definitely better than a 90 degree day, it was about 58 degrees. But besides that it was a big meet, we're talking the top 5 class A teams in the state and the top class B school. But boy did we make our presence bold. We showed those upper schools what we can do and we had some of the middle schoolers really push hard and PR. That's what we look for as athletes, improvement and knowing that you have never ran that fast in your life and that's one of the best feelings ever!! After said and done, we all had a great day and we all "ran with a purpose" as Coach Allan would say! Adam Arnold - Freshman Captain This week was a hard week with the first week of school, a meet and everyone being tired, a little dehydrated, and figuring out their sleeping schedule. The meet went well even though everyone was a dragging a little from getting up early for school. The middle school boys did really well with Joe, Quinn, and Wyatt placing one, two, three respectively, with Carter finishing 11th and Dylan 12th to have the boys team finishing first with 29 points. The middle school girls also did really well with the team taking 3rd finishing behind Red River and Devils Lake. The JV boys placed 5th with Alejandro being the first finisher for the JV boys in 11th placel. The JV girls ran awesome, with Maria Kroeber finishing 4 her highest placing ever, and the team took 1st in the JV division! The Varsity boys placed 3rd even with some of the top 5 from last meet not be able to run because of injuries. Because of this, we had to have some of the other runners for Varsity stand up, especially Ethan running his first cross country race and placing 23rd.The Varsity girls team took first putting 4 of their top 5 in the top 10 at the Northwood meet! I would say that it was a successful week and a great meet! Ryan Meyer - Freshman - Captain It's been a tough week for everyone, now that school has started. Sleep schedules were off and everyone was tied up with homework from the new year. Everyone still did really good at practice and it showed in our race on Thursday. Northwood is a tough course with multiple hills and everyone handled it very well! A couple of our runners either placed for the first time or won their first race! Annika Green who won the girls sword placed for the first time ever!! She works so hard and it was great to see her succeed from all the hard work. Alexis Roehl won her first race and so did Joe Williamson. Ethan won the boys shield for having a great first race after being at soccer practice all week long. The JV girls won their first race this year, the varsity girls came with a win again, and the boys varsity team placed very well considering we didn't have all of our top runners.
Overall I'm so happy with how everyone did and how everyone is handling the season so far. This week will be another good week and we get ready for West Fargo on Saturday! I'm excited to see what we can do! Brenna Bartsch - Senior Captain |
