Girls Captain Blog - Sertoma Meet
The Sertoma meet was full of PR's and season best times, even if we did have to wait for endless heats of many of the events. For those who weren't there, there were over 100 boys in the 200m dash and 6 heats of the girls' 800... And that was just a taste of it. In the distance races alone we had a great day! All 3 of our 2 milers ran their best times of the season! Mandy Williamson ran a PR of 11:34 in the 2 mile, cutting off 10 seconds! Rachel Torrey ran her best time of the year with a 12:06, missing the qualifying time by just over a second. Maggie Powell PR'd again this season with an outstanding time of 12:35! They also placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the meet, racking in tons of points for Central! There were lots of Central runners in the 800 and many ran fantastic times! Karly Ackley, who was co-Outstanding Athlete of the meet, started off the 800's with a fabulous PR and state qualifying time of 2:24! It was a nail biter to watch! Not only did she qualify, but she made up tons of ground by moving from 3rd to 1st within the last 250m of the race! In the next heat, Alexis Roehl pumped out a 2:31! The rest of the 800 runners (who were all within 10 seconds of each other but in 3 different heats) fought hard to try and beat our times! Megan Peck, Autumn Charette, Aislinn Hunter, Mikayla Weiss, and I all managed to make it under 3:00, a big accomplishment for new track runners like them! The meet had many other highlights that I wish I had space to write about but this is a blog and not a 200 page novel. To sum it up, this was easily our best meet of the season this far, but it is only the beginning! Rachel Cox - Girls Captain Sertoma was a great meet this year. The boys' team brought in over 30 PRs! The races were fast, and lots of state-qualifying runners came to the meet. It was great to have a big meet after the dual. It really made a great day for competition. Leif Larsen, one of our team's captains, had one of his best meets ever on Tuesday. He started out with the 4x200 relay, and as usual, he ran a solid time. After that, he went out and had 7 second PR in the mile, qualifying it for the first time with a 4:33. The 800 was next for him. He went out aggressively, leading the first lap. By the end of his race, he earned himself a time of 2:04, a huge PR for him. At the end of the meet, he ran a 54 second split in the 4x400, his fastest 400 ever by 2 seconds. To put that in perspective, a 2 second PR in the 400 is the same as an 8 second PR in the mile. That almost never happens, especially for a top runner. I usually don't like to focus only on distance runners, but I feel that its necessary to mention Ryan Keogh's performance. Ryan was the only 2-miler Central had at Sertoma. Competing in any event in track by yourself is very hard. Ryan didn't let it get to him though. Overall, this may have been Central's best meet yet. We had several people qualify events, and tons of PRs. Its crazy to see our team do so well, even with the wind we had! I really hope Central continues to compete this well for the rest of the season. -David Hettich, captain The boys had a very good Duel meet on Friday with 22 personal records!! Leading the way was Senior Terence Adams with a 7' 6" PR in the discus to good enough for him to qualify for the state meet.
One of my favorite things about track is the diversity that can be found in a track team. We have sprinters, jumpers, pole-vaulters, distance runners, throwers, and more! I love how everybody is different. We're now well into the season. Our new teammates have had their appetizers. It's now time for them to stop being a "beginner," and start being a competitor. Track has now become a competitive sport. One thing I am happy to see is the younger members of our team treating track how it should be treated. I don't see people getting discouraged when they aren't keeping up with seniors and juniors. In fact, I see lots of younger Central team members competing with and beating older athletes from other cities. At the EDC indoor/outdoor meet, my favorite race I saw was the 4x400 relay. Our team had three underclassmen, and we still competed!
Overall, our season has had a great start. I have loved watching our team pull together and enter this season excitedly and ambitiously. Now is the time to really start competing! -David Hettich, Captain The EDC indoor/outdoor meet went really great on Tuesday! It was a beautiful day with barely any wind. Over all the Central girls got fourth and we had three girls qualify for state. Grace Finney in pole vault, Mandy Williamson in the two mile, and Karly (me) in the mile and two mile. the distance crew had multiple people place in the top eight and earn points for the team. In the mile we had me (1st), Alexis Roehl (5th), and Mandy Williamson (7th). In the 800m run, Alexis ran a hard race and was our lone placer with 8th. Our girls captured 5 of the top 7 spots in the two mile me (1st), Mandy (2nd), Grace Roehl (4th) Rachel (Ratty) Torrey (5th), and Maggie Powell (7th). Many of the girls above had amazing PR's and I'm super excited to see how we will compete in the upcoming meets! Our team will definitely be one to watch.
Karly Ackley, Distance Captain The EDC indoor/outdoor track meet was overall successful for many of the girls at GFC. We had three who qualified for state and many others who were close! Girls placed 4th overall. As for the sprinters, we also had a good day! Sophia Nelson placed in all of her events: long jump 6th, 4x100m relay 6th, and 100m Hurdles 7th. Lexi Grinolds, also placed in the 4x100m relay, and took 3rd in the 3rd heat of the 100m dash. I was in the 4x400 m relay with Lexi, Alexis Roehl, and Megan Peck, and placed 7th. Overall it was a successful meet! Madde Krenelka, Sprint Captain This year I started the season a little different than I usually do. Early February I acquired a shin injury that caused me to take several weeks off from running and cross train on the elliptical and bike. So that I could get more than one event in meets, Coach Allan sent me over to javelin and discus practice. Now I get a little taste of both distance and throwing practice. At the EDC "indoor", I got to chance to throw javelin for the first time, along with freshman Alexia Scott, also a fellow distance runner. Although we weren't the greatest (I threw 44' 7", and Alexia threw 49' 4"), it was fun to try something new at a meet rather than just run! I also ran in the 4x800 relay with Rachel "Rat" Torrey, Grace Roehl, and Maggie Powell. We got 5th and everyone ran their fastest splits of the season, some ran their fastest times of their lives! There were plenty of PR's because of the benefit of running outdoors and we had three State Qualifiers! But there were some flops in the meet. The 4th and 5th heat of the girls' 400 had clock problems so unfortunately none of them have official times! Other than that, the meet went really well. We got 4th as a team, which is a major improvement from previous years and I'm excited to see where we go! Rachel Cox, Distance Captain |
