Shanley Invite - Boys keep improving

Once again the weather turned out to be better than forecasted.  Low winds at 10 mph and tempertures hovering around 48 degrees, allowed the Central boys to produce 19 Personal Records (PR's)!

The field events provided several of those PR's.  Jake Mussman started the day out with a PR of 6 feet in the high jump (seen above).  He is just 2 inches short of qualifying for state in that event.  Other PR's in the field events were Bilal Suleiman Long Jump, Joey Prince Triple Jump and Long Jump,  Jack Mussman Discus, Jon Krause Discus.

Central Boys on the track also captured their share of PRs.  Freshman Andrew Arnold continues to improve in the hurdles and lowered his best times in both the 110H and 300H's.  In the sprints Matt Miranda PR in the 100m, 200m, and his 400m races. Darian Colgrove also ran his best 200m of his career.

The boys and girls distance crew continued showing it's strength by producing a lot of PR's.  Camron Roehl won the mile with a state best 4:19.92 and a new PR. Freshman Richie Osborn is slowly approaching the normal freshman goal of 5 minute mile by knocking off another 7 seconds to run a 5:11.81.  Camron (1:58.24) and Julian Cavanaugh (2:14.14) both posted PR's in the 800. Shay Doward made sure the boys scored in every distance event by cutting off 12 secs to run a 11:15.40 two mile, but Ryan Keogh had the boys biggest PR of 27 seconds with a new PR of 12:20.87.

The Central distance girls also scored in each distance event.  They started the meet with three PR's in the mile, Karly Ackley (5:20.51), Rachel Torrey (5:44.93), and Mandy Williamson (5:45.89).  The girls contiuned their big day with more PR's in the 800m Karly Ackley (2:28.64), Rachel Torrey (2:38.89), and Madison Diemert (2:59.49).  One of the most exciting races of the day for the Knights distance runners was the girls 3200m.  The three Central girls combined cut off 1:13 in personal times.  Alexis Roehl finished second (11:58.60) but more importantly qualified for the state meet, beating the qualifing time of 12:05.  Her sister Grace (12:15.52), moved much closer to the SQ time along with teammate Rachel Cox (12:24.23).

Central Attended the 1st Annual Eagles Relays on April 17th. We were fortunate to have a great spring day, 45 degree's and little to no wind for most events.  This meet was a very unique experience for all teams as all events were done relay style.  Running races either exchanged a baton or added your participant’s times together.  Field events were your participant’s heights or distances added together.  Central's distance runners ran to several wins.  The boy's started the day with the 3x3200m race.  The winning team was determined by adding together your three runner's times together. Senior Camron Roehl took advantage of the perfect running conditions, and the help of his future NDSU teammate from Fargo Davies Brandon Scheel. Both of them ran the fastest times in North Dakota this year Scheel was second with 9:29.11 and Camron winning in 9:22.92.  Camron was just .18 from besting Jim Herberg's 1980 Central School record of 9:22.74.  Sophmore Leif Larsen punched his ticket for the state meeet by running a PR of 9:57.04, finishing 3rd overall.  David Hettich, another sophmore, also PRed with 10:41.89.  These three boys combined for a time of 30:01.85 won the 3x3200.

The Central distance girls, not wanting to be outdone by the boys, were led with Freshman Karly Ackley running a blistering 11:24.21 (2nd fastest in ND) to win the girls 3x3200.  She was followed by 7th grader Mandy Williamson, 12:16.39, in 5th and 8th Grader Rachel Torrey, 12:19.55, in 6th.  All three girls turned in PR performances to have a combined time of 36:00.55 for an overall first place finish.

The Central boys also won the Distance Medley, with a team that consisted of Soph Leif Larsen (1200m), Senior Bilal Sulieman (400m), Senior Ian Kelly (800m) and Senior Camron Roehl (1600m),  The girls team of 7th grader Alexis Roehl (1200m), 8th grader Rachel Torrey (400m), Junior Rachel Cox (800m) and Karly Ackley (1600m) finished second.

The Central boys triple jumping crew lead by the overall winner Junior Jake Mussman (40-06) won the boys 3xtriple jump team event.  Junior Bilal Suleiman (37-10) along with Freshman James Galan (32-10)
who really stepped up for his team and helped them to win a 3rd relay victory for the Central boys!

The boys team finished 5th overall in the Eagles Relay meet.  Everyone enjoyed the different type of  meet, and I was extremely proud of how our athletes competed!

GFC vs RR Duel

The weather for the annual Central Knights vs Red River Duel started out nice but by the end of the meet the temperature dropped and wind increased to make the 4x400m relay a chilly last event. Red River won the duel but both the Girls and Boys team competed hard and showed a lot of improvement. Jasmine Lindblad and Terence Adams had a great day throwing the shot and discus.  Bilal Sulieman swept the long jump and triple jump with impressive jumps for the first outdoor meet.  We also had five rookie track boys running the 300m Hurdles for the first time.  I was very pleased with how they did and am excited to see how they improve over the next few years.

The boys and girls distance runners brought the success they had indoors to the outdoor track. Camron ran 4:28.88 to break Paul Schafer's (GFC) meet record.  He followed that state qualifying race with a win the 800m in a time of 2:02:98, just missing State Qualilfying.  Karly Ackley lead the deep distance girls team to a first place in the mile, 5:28.21 (State Qualiflying) followed by Alexis Roehl, Rachel Torrey, Grace Roehl, and Mandy Williamson to help the girls place five in the top 6 spots.  Karly and Rachel Cox placed 1st and 2nd in the 800m. Eight grader Rachel Torrey PR'd in the 3200m by 27 seconds to win her first high school race. Grace Roehl, Alexis Roehl, and Mandy Williamson all raced well to place in the top 5.  Sophomore Leif Larsen continued his strong spring season with a win in the 3200m for the boys, followed by fellow Knights, David Hettich, Shay Doward, Walker Matthew, and Ryan Keogh who all placed.

Outside on Cushman Field!!!!!

Hello GF Track and Field followers, first I should apologize for having not written anything about the season so far, I will try to post on a regular basis for the rest of the season!

Yesterday we finally got outside on Cushman Field, it was wonderful to leave the hallways and the cramped indoor track at Central and breath fresh air.  It was interesting to have 68 degree weather, and piles of snow still visible on the South corner of the track and other places.

The team is getting ready for our first outdoor meet, which this Friday, April 11th, Central vs Red River in our annual duel. The first day outside was used to teach new athletes how to do 4x100 and 4x200 hand offs, and use actual pits for jumping!  Everyone is excited to finally have our first outdoor meet.
