This has been a very busy week and I thought the whole team did a great job working hard, and having a great first meet. The week started out with two different speed workouts on Monday, Elmo run for the younger ones and 800s for the older ones. Everyone did a great job and it was fun to see how much some of the girls and boys have improved from just the first meet! Our next speed workout was on Thursday, and the whole team got to do 3,2,1's. We practiced running up the dike, and although it was difficult some of the younger girls and boys showed initiative and fought through it. We then had a pasta feed at my house(the Roehls) and it was great to see everyone there! On Friday we started getting ready for the meet, by our individual coaches talking to us about our race strategies. The coaches really stressed running in packs, and just to have fun at the first meet of the season. On Friday night we had a movie night at the Berry's house that the athletes and the parents got to go to. We watched McFarland USA as some pre-race motivation. At 8 AM sharp we were in the bus heading off to Hillsboro for out first cross country meet of the season. Although a lot of people had never raced before, they all did very well. Marie Deren and Hannah Hynek both placed in the top 20 of the middle school division which is very good considering both had never ran a xc race before! Keirstyn G. and Madison Eldon almost got in the top 20 being 21, and 22 respectivley. In the middle school boys division Quinn Roehl got his first win and Wyatt M. was a top 10 finisher also. The girls varsity team went 1,2,3 with Rachel Torrey(with her first ever cross country win!!)Alexis Roehl, and Mikayla Weiss respectively. Lauren Harrison had an outstanding race getting 9th place! Sophia Roehl barely missed placing getting 21st. On the boys varsity side Ryan Meyer had a great race with a 12th place finish and Eric Olsen also secured top 20 by placing 19th. Joe Williamson did great considering he was asked to run varsity the day before! The girls middle team placed 4th, the boys middle team 2nd, girls varsity won our first meet of the year, and the boys varsity got 3rd! Overall it was a very successful week and first meet of the year. I am excited to see what we can do later on in the season!

This last week has been an exciting one. It started off with a speed workout on Monday. Some of the younger kids went to University Park and got do Elmo Run while some of the older runners went to Riverside for 800 repeats. Although a couple people had a tough time they powered through and the workouts were a success overall. On Tuesday the team went on a normal run down Belmont and we all stopped to sprints up the sledding hill. The next day had beautiful running weather-- cool and cloudy. It was perfect for our long run which we completed on the four-mile loop. Thursday was when the week really started to get fun. The team ran to Riverside and we practiced pack running during our second speed workout of the week. After that, everyone gathered at the Roehl’s house for a team pasta feed where we hung out and each ate our weight in spaghetti. Then on Friday we had another normal run down University and afterwards everyone drove over to Lincoln. Once there, the boys played games like Magic while the girls made bracelets and anklets to wear to the first meet. Later that evening, a bunch of us met at the Berry’s house to watch McFarland, USA. Saturday was by far my favorite day. Everyone showed up early for the bus which was pretty impressive. On the way to Hillsboro we exchanged words of encouragement, snacks, and goofy toys through secret sister and undercover brother gifts. Upon arrival, we set up camp and walked the course. For many people on our team, it was their first cross country race and they did really well! I couldn’t be more proud of how our team competed and how strong everyone already looked. Just about everyone I asked said they had a good race and a lot of them have new personal records to prove it. This meet was a great way to kick off the season and set a really good tone. I can’t wait to see how the team grows over the next couple of months!
